Wszystkie filmy gramy w wersji dwujęzycznej: z polskimi i angielskimi napisami.

ALCARRÁS | 14.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Carla Simón

(Złoty Niedźwiedź – Berlinale)

Wielki powrót autorki „Lata 1993”. Nagrodzona Złotym Niedźwiedziem na Berlinale opowieść o blaskach i cieniach codziennego życia rolników z katalońskiej wioski. Carla Simón ponownie umieszcza w centrum wydarzeń dziecięcych bohaterów, co nadaje błahym, pozornie nieefektownym wydarzeniom walor niezwykłości. Ale autobiograficzna szczerość, ciepło i poczucie humoru mają w „Alcarràs” wydźwięk polityczny. Przejmujący film o starciu tradycji z nowoczesnością i bohaterach zmuszonych do dokonania wyboru między pragmatyzmem a idealizmem.

It was worth waiting five long years for Carla Simón latest film, after her memorable Summer 1993. Alcarràs received the Golden Bear at Berlinale and the Catalan director managed to keep everything that made her debut so exciting. The story of the light and shadows of everyday life of farmers from the titular village offers an autobiographical sincerity, warmth and a discreet sense of humor, familiar from Summer 1993. In both films, placing children in the center allows the director to give the trivial, seemingly plain events an extraordinary quality. However, this is where the similarities end, as the intimate Alcarràs is unexpectedly enriched with political overtones nearly totally absent from Simón’s debut. As in the classic The Tree of Wooden Clogs, the peace of the provincial world is irreversibly shattered by modernity and progress. In the face of these events, the protagonists must make the choice between pragmatism and idealism before our very eyes.

BLISKO (CLOSE) | 11.09. godz. 18:00

Reż. Lukas Dhont

(Grand Prix – Cannes)

Jeden z najpiękniejszych filmów tegorocznego festiwalu w Cannes. Nagrodzone Grand Prix „Blisko” Lukasa Dhonta, autora pamiętnej „Girl”, to sensualna i czuła opowieść o przyjaźni dwóch 13-latków.

The most beautiful movie of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Lukas Dhont’s Grand Prix winning Close is a sensual and tender story about the friendship of two 13-year-olds. Leo and Remi love spending time with each other, their relationship is intense, spontaneous, lively. But silly gossip, peer pressure and the feeling of being lost in a world that is never obvious make Leo start distancing himself and hurting Remi. No one in contemporary cinema knows better how to work with young actors than the author of the memorable Girl. Veracity rings out from every gesture, glance and word spoken by teenage actors. Dhont talks about the helplessness that is an inherent part of adolescence – at the age of 13, who can assess the strength of their feelings and decisions? The 31-year-old Belgian director does not judge. He is guided by an extraordinary empathy that distinguishes only the greatest humanists in the moviemaking world. Close becomes not only a beautifully filmed coming-of-age story, but, above all, a universal film about accepting one’s mistakes and learning to experience the most difficult and brutal emotions.

BOHATER | 11.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Ali Asghar Farhadi

(Grand Prix – Cannes)

Mocne, perfekcyjne dramaturgicznie kino moralnego niepokoju.

Two-time Academy Award winner (for A Separation and The Salesman) Asghar Farhadi returns to his native Iran. Shown in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, A Hero is a fascinating drama about a man who goes to debtor’s prison. During a two-day leave, Rahim receives a bag of valuables and faces a dilemma of whether to appropriate the loss, pay off the creditor and ensure his freedom, or follow his conscience and find the owner. Farhadi precisely weaves a multi-layered parable about a man who tries to act according to common mores and values, but instead of understanding, he encounters aversion and jealousy on his way. Farhadi also provocatively asks how much a person’s judgment depends on other people’s views. Powerful, dramatically perfect cinema of moral anxiety.

HOLY SPIDER | 18.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Ali Abbasi

(Najlepsza Aktorka – Cannes)

Ali Abbasi shocked audiences with his freewheeling attitude to the sex life of trolls in Border. He now moves on to a serious subject in this film based on a true story about a serial killer who targeted sex workers in Iran in the early 2000s. The killer claimed that he only wanted to „cleanse” the streets of evil, and a lot of people felt he was right. With the help of Zar Amir-Ebrahimi, the first Iranian woman to win the best actress award in the Cannes main competition, Abbasi shows a world where violent lunatics get applause while women fighting for their survival are considered worthless. This world, akin to a thriller, sounds familiar. However, instead of solving puzzles, the director focuses on a society that has already made up its mind. Apparently, violence is excusable if a respected man commits it, one who claims he’s trying to protect children from corruption. However, in Holy Spider – a film that Abbasi ultimately made in Jordan – women who are killed with impunity are people, not the anonymous victims disowned even by their own families.

IO (EO) | 09.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Jerzy Skolimowski

(Nagroda Jury – Cannes)

„IO” to zapierająca dech w piersiach odyseja, porywające kinowe doświadczenie i nakręcony z imponującym rozmachem obraz współczesnego świata. Film Jerzego Skolimowskiego stał się sensacją festiwalu w Cannes, skąd wyjechał z Nagrodą Jury. Opowieść o nas samych, odbijających się w oczach pewnego osiołka, zachwyciła artystyczną brawurą i młodzieńczą energią, choć firmuje ją swoim nazwiskiem 84-letni mistrz europejskiego kina. Dzieło, które łączy realistyczne i wizjonerskie, przyziemne i metafizyczne, krytyczne i empatyczne; swoim rozmachem przypomina najwspanialsze obrazy Hieronima Boscha i Pietera Bruegla. W podróży towarzyszą bohaterowi m.in. Sandra Drzymalska, Mateusz Kościukiewicz i Isabelle Huppert.

This visionary film by European cinema veteran Jerzy Skolimowski made a sensational splash at last year’s Cannes Festival, where it deservedly won the Jury Prize. The director of Barrier, The Shout and Essential Killing references Robert Bresson’s legendary film Au Hasard Balthazar with a donkey as the protagonist. We watch the epic journey of the eponymous EO, who comes under the care of the wise and the stupid, the good and the brutal, as well as empathetic and vain people. Skolimowski creates a simple though visually stunning universal parable about the condition of contemporary society, and about the imbalance between the worlds of man and animal. It is also a wonderfully poetic film about the need for freedom and about incapacitation. The Polish master filmmaker is unafraid to experiment; Michał Dymek’s camera performs extraordinary acrobatics – resulting in a mesmerizingly fresh work that seems directed by a young artist leveraging the possibilities of contemporary cinema. That’s Skolimowski – eternally New Wave, a searcher full of bravado and confidence. We’re lucky to have him.

NITRAM | 15.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Justin Kurzel

(Najlepszy Aktor – Cannes)

Hipnotyczny thriller psychologiczny z fenomenalną rolą nagrodzonego w Cannes Caleba Landry’ego Jonesa. Film inspirowany życiem Martina Bryanta, sprawcy największej masowej strzelaniny w historii Australii w 1996 roku.

In 1996, Martin Bryant shot 35 people and injured dozens more in the Tasmanian city of Port Arthur, making it the largest mass shooting in Australia’s history. Justin Kurzel’s film does not recreate the actual massacre although in earlier films, such as Snowtown or the adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, he does not spare viewers on-screen violence, this time he is interested in exploring the killer’s persona. However, Nitram is not Bryant’s biography, although it draws a lot on his life story, thus avoiding a stereotypical narrative about the mind of a mass murderer. The eponymous main character, superbly played by the Cannes award-winning Caleb Landry Jones, is therefore not a sociopath from a Hollywood thriller, but a man who wants to be seen and for whom violence becomes the only available and obvious solution to his problems. Precisely directed, narrated with emotional perspective, Nitram seems to be a film that, instead of shocking with brutal scenes, raises instinctive anxiety.

NOSTALGIA | 13.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Mario Martone

Sprzymierzony z walczącym z mafią księdzem i niepogodzony z własną mroczną przeszłością, Felice próbuje znaleźć starego przyjaciela, zapominając, że nostalgia bywa pułapką. Opowieść o fatum i spotkaniu z cieniem – ukrytym w labiryncie miasta i w labiryncie duszy.

It’s an enclave that even Neapolitans don’t know well, far from the sea and quite dangerous, which was abandoned for many years, the director of Nostalgia said about Rione Sanità in an interview with Variety.  And it is this district of Naples, controlled by the Camorra, one of the poorest and most spectacular districts of the city, that is the main protagonist of a moving story about fate and an encounter with a shadow – the one hidden in the city’s labyrinth and the one lurking in the soul. Felice Lasco (the magnetic Pierfrancesco Favino, star of Marco Belocchio’s The Traitor) returns to the city and his old mother after forty years. Driven by guilt, overpowered by longing, addled by a naive faith in absolution, he doesn’t notice that the district of catacombs, cemeteries, shabby basements – bassi and tangled streets is sucking him in like a swamp. Allied with a mafia-fighting local priest, unreconciled to his own dark past, disregarding the warnings, Felice searches for an old friend in Sanità, while forgetting that nostalgia is sometimes a trap. The movie, with which Mario Martone returned to the Cannes competition after 27 years, refers to his Nasty Love (Amore molesto, 1995), in which a Neapolitan woman was coming to terms with her past.

PAMFIR | 12.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk

(Quinzaine des Realisateurs – Cannes)

Surowy i przejmujący do szpiku kości film pokazywany premierowo na tegorocznym festiwalu w Cannes. Mroczny portret ukraińskiej prowincji w formie kryminalnego dramatu. Dawny przemytnik Leonid, zwany przez znajomych Pamfirem, pracuje w Polsce, by uczciwie zapewnić byt rodzinie. Leonid musi uruchomić dawne przestępcze kontakty, by spłacić dług, a każda decyzja bohatera wciąga go coraz głębiej w sieć korupcyjnych i kryminalnych układów.

The mysterious figures in devilish masks and straw costumes are reminiscent of folk horror movies, but the preparations for Malanka, a folk celebration of the New Year, are more like a backdrop for a dark crime drama. Leonid, aka Pamfir, gave up smuggling years ago to earn honest money in Poland. After a long absence, he returns to his home village somewhere on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The yearning son sets fire to the local Orthodox church – he believes this will keep his father at home. The problem is that the temple no longer belongs to the church, but to the local mafia. Leonid must reach out to his old criminal contacts to pay off the debt and every decision he makes draws him deeper into a web of corruption and mafia dealings. War is almost absent from the story – there are mentions of fighting in the Donbass and of someone who died at the hands of separatists – yet Pamfir has a weight and darkness in him as if it were an omen of the drama to come. After the Cannes première, the director admitted that his movie took on a new meaning after the Russian invasion. All of a sudden, there is this connection to what is happening now, making it seem like some kind of premonition, said Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk.

PODEJRZANA (DECISION TO LEAVE) | 17.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Park Chan-wook

(Najlepsza Reżyseria – Cannes)

Zafascynowany „Zawrotem głowy” koreański reżyser Park Chan-wook („Służąca”, „Oldboy”) spłaca dług zaciągnięty u Alfreda Hitchcocka – i robi to w niesamowitym stylu.

Park Chan-wook supposedly decided to become a director after seeing Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. If that’s true, he’s now paying off his debt to the master in an incredible way. In his film, which already received the award for best director in Cannes, images from the illustrious British director’s thrillers mix with emotions straight from the cinema of Douglas Sirk, and a devastating obsession turns into love – maybe love is becoming an obsession after all. A married policeman meets a young widow whose husband just died in an accident. He has a good life, but soon starts sleeping under her window. He watches tenderly as the woman eats ice cream out of the box alone again instead of preparing dinner. The South Korean director, who in years past showed how much can be accomplished with the desire for revenge and a hammer, calms down. A feeling that makes no sense turns out to be the strongest this time, and a merely fleeting touch causes a tremor. Decision to Leave is perhaps the most beautiful romantic film of the year, about a love that no one noticed and that perhaps wasn’t there at all. But if it wasn’t there, why does it hurt so much?

PRZEŚWIETLENIE (R.M.N.) | 16.09. godz. 20:00

Reż. Cristian Mungiu

If Mungiu’s previous movies were chamber pieces, R.M.N. is a symphony for cello, bears, several nationalities, a quarrelling choir and the musical theme from In the Mood for Love. Even at Cannes, where the film premiered (in the main competition), the 17-minute scene shot in one take, in which 26 people speak, has become legendary. Out of the crowd, the director picks a few characters who serve as guides in this terrifyingly funny, bitter, painfully realistic and, at the same time, offering flashes of metaphysics story about globalization, the crisis in masculinity, complexes and nationalism. The story takes place in a Transylvanian town full of silent prejudices and long-standing resentments, which explode when new workers, immigrants from Sri Lanka, arrive at the local bakery. Xenophobia is the daily bread in a region cohabited by several nationalities, so there’s nothing like a common enemy. This motif is just one of many threads (the other being a love story, a childhood trauma, a comical figure of a French activist, and offended male pride) that ultimately intertwine to create an Eastern European Gordian knot in the middle of which we all find ourselves today, unable to neither cut or nor untie it.

SILENT TWINS | 17.09. godz. 18:00

Reż. Agnieszka Smoczyńska

(Konkurs Un Certain Regards – Cannes)

Przejmujący do szpiku kości film Agnieszki Smoczyńskiej („Córki dancingu”, „Fuga”) z Letitią Wright i Tamarą Lawrence w tytułowych rolach.

Agnieszka Smoczyńska tells the story of silent twins in an unusually empathetic way. The movie, based on a report by Marjorie Wallace, is a true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, black twins from Wales, who have only talked to each other since childhood. The sisters, who refuse to communicate verbally with their family members, teachers and peers, form a symbiotic duo, though not without rivalry. Their life goes on behind the closed doors of the girls’ room: in their imagination, in common (as they get older – less and less innocent) games and on the pages of the books they write. The girls’ inner world is shown with visual fantasy. Images and music take the place of unspoken words. In your imagination you can be a bird, the queen of the street, Michael Jackson or Princess Diana. Or all of them at the same time. Touching to the quick, some have called this the most beautiful movie of this year’s Cannes festival, it can be read as a story of teenage rebellion, of eccentric fun that has spun out of control. It could illustrate a dysfunctional relationship or a mental crisis brought on by long-term oppression. Or perhaps it is a study of toxic love, so strong that the outside world ceases to matter and a normal life is impossible?

SUNDOWN | 10.09. godz. 18:00

Reż. Michel Franco

Well-off Neil (Tim Roth) and Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg) set off with their children on a carefree vacation to a Mexican resort. If, after reading the first sentence, you decided the film is soothing middle-of-the road commercial cinema that got into New Horizons by mistake, you fell for it. After all,  Sundown is directed by an old friend of the Wrocław audience – Michel Franco ( After LuciaChronicNew Order). The Mexican master has made yet another subversive film, in which an attractive shell conceals content that provokes reflection. The protagonists of  Sundown, thinking through the prism of stereotypes, unaware of their own privileges, clearly lost in an exotic paradise, arouse amusement and sympathy alternately. It is hard to resist the impression that in this respect they resemble characters from the books of Michel Houellebecq, and that  Sundown could be a screen adaptation of a lost novel by the French master.

TORI I LOKITA | 18.09. godz. 18:00

Reż. Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne

(Nagroda 75cio lecia – Cannes)

Teenage Lokita (Mbundu Joely) and the younger Tori (Pablo Schils), come from Benin. They arrived in Europe via the dangerous route across the Mediterranean Sea. First, they reached Italy, where someone taught them the song Alla fiera dell’est. Now they are in Belgium, where they are applying for residence. They claim to be siblings, but are they really? It does not matter – without ‘papers’ they cannot prove it anyway. Although officially they are not allowed to work, they have to make a living somehow and support their family in Africa. Therefore, under the guise of delivering pizzas, they sell drugs… Will they manage to get out of the vicious circle into which human traffickers, the criminal world and heartless bureaucracy drag migrants? The latest movie by New Horizon audience favorites proves the Dardenne brothers are still the conscience of Europe. Tori and Lokita came to us straight from Cannes, where the Belgian masters received the festival’s special anniversary award, where they have been triumphing for three decades.

W TRÓJKĄCIE (TRIANGLE OF SADNESS) | 10.09. godz 20:00

Ruben Östlund, a two-time winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, takes us on a wild ride aboard a luxurious cruise ship with a beautiful Instagram star, Yaya (Charlbi Dean); a model just starting out, Carl (Harris Dickinson); and a constantly drunk captain (the hilarious Woody Harrelson). Those enjoying the fun and games aboard the ship include celebrities and the rich—retired arms dealers, Russia’s fertilizer king, aging divas and cantankerous millionaires. This cruise on the emerald seas gets so out of hand that it makes the Titanic disaster look like a romantic workplace accident. The director of Force Majeure and The Square sails close to the wind and doesn’t give us a moment to catch our breath, as he juggles the social roles of the characters, exposing their vanity and selfishness, mocking the empty fame of influencers and ridiculing the world of fashion—and he does so with perceptible pleasure. Triangle of Sadness is a wild, wonderfully written comedy that takes place in three astonishing, satirical acts, offering an extraordinarily current, no-holds-barred commentary on the absurdly cruel times we are living in. Our “triangles of solitude” are sure to open up during a screening.
